Description
Love Is You To Me is the third album by the American pop singer Kim Boyce, released on Myrrh Records in 1989, a division of Word. Also distributed by A&M Records. The album was produced by Brian Tankersley, Rhett Lawrence and Tim Miner.
Featuring a cover of “O Lord You’re Beautiful”, a song written by Keith Green and originally recorded on his 1980-album, So You Wanna Go Back to Egypt. “I’m Asking You” features guest vocals by Bryan Duncan.
‘Love Is You to Me’, the third album from vocalist Kim Boyce, not only contains her most mature and inspiring performance to date, but puts her on the level with contemporary Christian music’s best pop music performers.
Boyce joins with songwriters Jimmie Lee, BeBe Winans, Keith Green, Tim Miner and others to escape any expectations that she could not deliver a serious, pop effort. ‘Love Is You to Me’ still has her signature dance numbers that will please her youthful audience, but ballads like «Faith» and «O Lord, You’re Beautiful» prove that Boyce brings a fuller definition of her talent to this fine offering.
Lyrically, Boyce and her co-writers are digging deeper, below the surface of fun, exuberant worship to a belief that God walks through hard times with us to the other side. In «I’m Asking You», she cries to God “You promised to hear me crying/ Now I’m calling your name/ This is not a game.” In «Faith» she reminds us that “Faith can make a broken heart mend.”
With Beth Weaver’s composition, «It Always Comes Back to You», Boyce affirms that “Emotions can blind me/ Hard times will find me/ The questions remind me what’s true/ …I’ve tasted tears and laughter/ At times I’ve felt alone/ Your word holds true/ You follow through with tenderness/ When I’ve been at the edge.”
The sense of faith and hope in the face of struggle and hardship gives substance to comfortable statements that “For every lonely heart there’s an answer/ For every silent voice is a prayer/ For every empty life that lives in longing/ Somebody’s there/ …the Lord is waiting.” Boyce is standing with those in her audience who need to hear that God’s comfort and peace are available, and saying that she is like them, and it’s real because she’s been there.
On the whole, ‘Love Is You to Me’, has a rich texture, but lacks some of the punch that one might associate with current dance music, a la Paula Abdul and Jodi Watley. Boyce goes for a more mature audience, somewhere closer to mainstream Christian radio. But her young wanna be’s are not left out. «Holdin’ My Hand», «Dancin’ My Heart Away», and «Best Friend» go a long way toward establishing her place on the dance floor.
Kim Boyce shoes depth, personality and heart with ‘Love Is You to Me’. She makes her claim as a fine singer with a real future as an artist and a strong ministry in the present. [Brian Quincy Newcomb, CCM, August 1989]
